Frequently asked

Questions, considered carefully.

Do I need a scan before attending?
Not always. Some patients already have imaging. Others may need imaging only if it is clinically appropriate. Imaging is useful when it helps diagnosis or treatment planning, but scan findings must always be interpreted in the context of symptoms and examination.
We will discuss your symptoms, medical history, previous treatments and goals. Where relevant, we will review your imaging and explain whether the findings are likely to be related to your pain. You will then be given a clear explanation of the possible diagnosis and treatment options.
If an injection is appropriate, the procedure will be explained before treatment. This includes the purpose of the injection, expected benefits, limitations and possible risks. Image guidance may be used to guide the needle to the intended area. Procedures are performed using aseptic technique.
Many image-guided injections are performed safely, but no procedure is risk-free. Possible risks may include temporary pain flare, bruising, bleeding, infection, allergic reaction, steroid-related side effects, or no improvement in symptoms. Specific risks depend on the procedure and will be discussed before treatment.
Aftercare depends on the procedure performed. Some patients are advised to rest briefly and then gradually return to normal activity. You will be given appropriate post-procedure advice.
Please seek urgent medical attention if you develop:
  • New bladder or bowel dysfunction
  • Numbness around the saddle area
  • Progressive leg or arm weakness
  • Fever with severe spinal pain
  • Feeling seriously unwell after a procedure
  • Severe or worsening symptoms that concern you
Dorset Pain Clinic does not provide emergency care. In an emergency, call 999 or attend urgent care.

What You Need to Know

Will an injection cure my pain?
An injection may help selected patients, but it is not a guaranteed cure. The aim may be to reduce pain, improve function and support rehabilitation.
This varies. Some patients notice improvement quickly, while others may take longer. Some patients may not improve.

This depends on the procedure and medication used. You will be advised before treatment.

This must be discussed before any procedure. Some medications may need special planning.
This depends on the service pathway and clinical suitability. Please contact the clinic and we will advise you.
